What are 'Topic' channels on YouTube?

Last reviewed: October 21, 2026 · Markdown version

A Topic channel is a channel YouTube builds by itself for a music artist, filled with videos its algorithms pick. YouTube's music help: “A topic channel, which YouTube auto-generates. These channels are titled “Artist Name - Topic” and say “auto-generated by YouTube” in the channel’s About section” (YouTube Help: Find music from artists you like, read 21 October 2026). The thing most people trip over is what subscribing to one does, and does not do.

How to tell you are looking at one

Two signs, both from that page: “- Topic” after the artist's name, and the words “auto-generated by YouTube” in the About section. The same page places it among four kinds of channel an artist can have: one the artist runs, a partner-provided one managed by a distributor or label, the Topic channel, and an Official Artist Channel that gathers the others.

Why it exists and what goes in it

YouTube says “A topic channel is created for an artist when they have a significant presence on YouTube”, and gives reasons one might be missing: few videos, few views, or videos that “don't meet YouTube's quality standards”. Its contents are machine-picked: “Using algorithms, YouTube figures out the central topics in a video and uses that info to develop video collections for an artist. Topic channels can contain content from an artist channel, as well as user-generated content. These channels don't convey any editorial opinion on the part of YouTube” (YouTube Help: Find music from artists you like, read 21 October 2026).

Subscribing to one: a name in your list, nothing in your feed

This is the documented surprise. Subscribing to a Topic channel “will add the topic channel to your subscriptions list, but will not add any videos to your subscriptions feed. You won’t get notifications from topic channels” (YouTube Help: Find music from artists you like, read 21 October 2026). If you follow an artist and never see their releases in Subscriptions, check whether the channel you followed ends in “- Topic”. A list with several of these is one reason a subscriptions feed runs out fast.

When the artist gets an Official Artist Channel

The same page says “If you’re already subscribed to an artist’s topic channel or partner-provided channel, you’ll automatically be subscribed to their Official Artist Channel when it’s created.” After that, the old subscriptions “will be inactive. This means they’ll no longer be in your subscriptions list”, and the Topic channel can still be found in Search but without a subscribe button.

From the artist's side, YouTube's Official Artist Channel help says “we merge subscribers from your topic channel, Vevo channel (if available), and your existing channel into your new channel” and that the subscribe button and count “will no longer be displayed on your existing channel or topic channel” (YouTube Help: Introduction to Official Artist Channels, read 21 October 2026).

So an artist's official channel can appear in your list without you pressing anything, which is the documented answer to one kind of subscription you never made.

Topic channels that are not artists

Both YouTube pages cited above describe Topic channels for artists and nothing else (YouTube Help: Find music from artists you like, read 21 October 2026). If you meet one named after a subject rather than a musician, those pages do not explain it, and we are not filling the gap with guesses.

Keep it or drop it

Following a Topic channel takes up no room in your feed, since it adds no videos there, but it lengthens the channel list you review. If you want an artist's new uploads in Subscriptions, follow the artist's own or official channel instead. Unsubscribing works as for any channel; see how to unsubscribe from a YouTube channel.
