Why am I not getting YouTube notifications from channels I subscribe to?

Usually because the channel's bell is on Personalized, not All, and YouTube says plainly that Personalized sends only some uploads. Subscribing turns on personalized notifications by itself, and that setting brings alerts “for some regular uploads, Shorts, and live streams” (YouTube Help: Manage YouTube notifications (Android), read 20 October 2026). Even on All, the same page warns that “not every new upload will result in a notification.” Work down the checks below in order. The first three are your own settings, and YouTube's help for creators says “Viewer notification settings cause almost all notification issues” (YouTube Help: Fix subscriber notification problems, read 20 October 2026).
1. The channel's bell
Open the channel page or one of its videos, tap the Notification bell next to Subscribed, and pick All (same Android page). What the other two mean:
- Personalized: YouTube decides per person. “The definition of "personalized" differs by user,” and the signals include your watch history, how often you watch the channel and how often you open notifications.
- None: no alerts at all from that channel.
On a computer, the bell switches between “All notifications” and “Personalized notifications” (YouTube Help: Manage YouTube notifications (computer), read 20 October 2026).
If you unsubscribed and came back, set the bell again: according to the computer page, a re-subscribe puts it back “to personalized or no notifications”.
2. Your phone or browser is blocking YouTube
Device settings sit above anything you choose inside YouTube. YouTube's creator help says it directly: “a subscriber's device setting can override YouTube and prevent notifications from reaching subscribers” (YouTube Help: Fix subscriber notification problems, read 20 October 2026).
- Android: Settings app › Notifications › App notifications › All apps › YouTube (YouTube Help: Manage YouTube notifications (Android), read 20 October 2026).
- iPhone: Settings app › Notifications › YouTube (YouTube Help: Manage YouTube notifications (iPhone), read 20 October 2026).
- Chrome on a computer: in YouTube's notification settings, “Under “Desktop notifications," click the button next to Chrome”. If that option is missing, YouTube says “your Chrome browser notifications may be turned off” (computer page above).
3. YouTube's own notification settings
Inside the app: profile picture › Settings › Notifications, then choose the types you want (Android page above). On a computer the same screen splits phone and desktop alerts under “General” from email under “Email notifications” (computer page above). The creator page adds a channel-by-channel list on mobile, under Settings › Notifications › Channel settings, which is worth a look if one channel went quiet and the rest did not.
4. Limits on YouTube's side that you cannot change
These come from the help YouTube writes for creators (YouTube Help: Fix subscriber notification problems, read 20 October 2026):
- Three a day per channel. “Viewers can get a maximum of 3 new video notifications from each channel in a 24 hour period.” A channel that uploads in bursts can also see its alerts paused: post more than 3 videos in a short time and YouTube “may temporarily stop sending notifications for 24 hours.”
- Late on purpose. Personalized alerts “are sent at the optimal time for each individual subscriber”, so some arrive hours after the upload. Subscribers on All “are typically told within minutes”.
- The creator opted out. A creator can untick “Publish to Subscriptions feed and notify subscribers” for a video, and quickly making a video private after publishing stops the sending.
- Made for kids. If a channel's audience is set as made for kids, you get no notifications and “You can't change this setting” (computer page above).
5. All, but you stopped watching
One rule catches people who chose All long ago: if you “haven’t watched or engaged with the channel in a while”, its alerts appear only inside the app, under the bell at the top right of Home (YouTube Help: Manage YouTube notifications (Android), read 20 October 2026). Nothing on your phone, but the alert is there when you open YouTube.
Still nothing?
YouTube has an interactive troubleshooter that starts by asking whether the problem is one channel or every notification, then which device (YouTube Help: Get help with YouTube notifications, read 20 October 2026). Its later answers load only as you click through, so we have not quoted them here.
And remember the fallback that never depends on alerts: the Subscriptions feed “will show any recently uploaded videos from your subscriptions” whatever the bell says (YouTube Help: Subscribe to YouTube channels (Android), read 20 October 2026). If that feed is missing videos too, the problem is elsewhere: see Subscriptions feed not showing videos. If what you want is fewer alerts, not more, turning off notifications for a channel is the reverse of this page.
