How do I see what country a YouTube channel is from?

Last reviewed: October 22, 2026 · Markdown version

Only if the channel's owner has set one, and even then it is the owner's own setting, not a location YouTube says it checks. Creators choose it in YouTube Studio under Country of residence: “You can choose the country/region for your YouTube channel using the Down arrow,” and “Eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program is based on the country/region setting you choose here” (YouTube Help: Manage channel settings, read 22 October 2026). That page is written for the owner and does not say whether, or where, viewers are shown the setting.

Where to look on the channel page

YouTube's profile help tells creators that their description “is accessible in the channel header” (YouTube Help: Manage your YouTube channel’s profile, read 22 October 2026). Every channel also has an About address of its own: add /about to the channel's handle, as in youtube.com/@veritasium/about.

What we measured, not what YouTube documents: the About page YouTube served for @veritasium carried its subscriber and view counts, its joined date, its links and the country “United States”; the About pages for @NASA and @Google carried the same kinds of detail but no country at all (checked 22 October 2026). So a missing country is common, and it tells you nothing either way: the owner may not have set one, or YouTube may not be showing it.

YouTube's viewer guide to channel pages does not mention a country. It walks through the Home tab, the Videos, Shorts and Live tabs, subscribing, memberships and merchandise, and has nothing on where a channel is based (YouTube Help: Find your way around YouTube channel pages, read 22 October 2026).

What the country field actually is

YouTube's developer reference describes the field in one line: “The country with which the channel is associated.” The next sentence says how it gets there: “To set this property's value, update the value of the brandingSettings.channel.country property” (YouTube Data API reference: Channels, read 22 October 2026). In other words, it is a value the channel's managers write. Neither that reference nor the Studio settings page says YouTube verifies it, so read it as what the owner told YouTube, not as proof of where anyone lives.

Other clues, and how far to trust them

Our view: when no country is shown, the description, the links in the header and the language of the videos are the usual hints, and each one can mislead. A channel run by a team in one country may publish in another country's language, and a channel can move. If the question matters, for a purchase, a sponsorship or a claim someone is making, treat the channel page as a starting point and look for the creator saying where they are in their own words.

Deciding whether to keep following it

Where a channel is based rarely settles whether it is worth a place in your list; whether it still posts usually does. If the channel you were checking has gone silent, what a dead YouTube channel means sorts the three senses of the word, and hiding a channel covers the ways to see less of one you no longer want.
